Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and we can already smell the turkey in the oven as we type this. It’s funny how the older you get, the more Thanksgiving becomes your favorite holiday. With so much good food and spending time with your family, it’s hard not to like any part of it. Actually, there is one circumstance that can make the day lag a little and or even cause blowout arguments.

That circumstance is a kitchen catastrophe - the event in which everyone realizes the proper preparation hadn’t been taken and the organization system failed. That terrible moment when everyone realizes they are going to have to wait an extra 2 hours for the turkey, yikes. Not to mention nobody has eaten yet either, that can make for a grumpy bunch of people.

Luckily, it’s easy to foresee these types of issues and create a plan to avoid them all together so that you can enjoy the day to the fullest. That is why we have come up with a 4-course recipe to successful kitchen organization.

1. “The Appetizer” aka “The Setup”

Much like how the appetizers are meant to calm everyone down and prime them for the main course, this section of the 4 Course recipe is all about preparing your space in advance so that you can remain calm and get ready for cooking the main entrees. It is absolutely crucial that you organize your kitchen pantry in terms of zones so that you waste no time while hot food is being prepared.

Consider labeling baskets and tubs with your most commonly used items such as baking soda and salt to further simplify your process. Spending an hour organizing your kitchen pantry is going to save you a giant headache the next time you have to prepare any meal. If you don’t believe your kitchen pantry organization is up to par with your holiday goals, then get some ideas of what properly organized pantries look like here and consider calling for a free consultation so that you can truly create the system you want to suit your kitchen goals.

2. “Green Dish” aka “The Prep Work”

Pro Tip: Go through your cooking list in advance as if you were doing a mock cook the day of. Create a schedule of what items will be cooked at what time. This is will guarantee that you don’t get stuck because you don’t have enough burners, oven space, or time. Remember that when it comes to thanksgiving day, you walk a fine line between a timely delicious meal, and a hungry bunch of grumps sitting around a table wishing that the turkey was cooked all the way through.

3. “The Main Course” aka “The Day Of”

It is important to begin cooking at the time you have scheduled out on the day off. Make sure the night before all dishes are washed and that you have enough of what you need in the first place. The day of grocery store run can be its own adventure in itself. Keep in mind, especially if you have kids, that they are going to be hungry, and it’s hard to convince someone to wait it out until 4pm when they want food now. Make sure the snacks become available fairly early on in the day so that you can have the kitchen all to yourself.

4. “Dessert” aka “I Cooked You Clean”

Now it's really the time to enjoy the fruits of your labor. You have hustled and bustled all day in order to get the meal on the table and you did it with superb timing! Now as everyone is topping their stomachs off with home-baked pies and eggnog, you get to do the same, knowing that you don’t have to get up again and that someone else will do the dishes. Talk about icing on the pie!

In summary, the four courses of custom kitchen organization involve, the setup (appetizer) which involves organizing your custom kitchen pantry, the prep work (greens), which will make the meal flow more smoothly, The day of (main course), which should on a schedule and considerate of the families immediate hunger, and the dessert(the dessert), which involves you enjoying a sweet treat while watching someone take care of the mess.
