Fixing Up a Master Bedroom on a Budget

You’ve seen photos of gorgeous master bedrooms that look like a relaxing place to sleep, unwind and simply enjoy some quiet time. The good news is that you can makeover your master bedroom on a budget. Here are some wallet-friendly ways to turn your master bedroom into an oasis of calm and pampering.

Clean and Reorganize

The first step toward achieving a master bedroom that you’ll be glad to land in at the end of a long, hard day is to get it clean and tidy. Take a few hours to declutter, dust, vacuum and reorganize. If it’s a bigger job, get your partner or a friend to help you, or break it up over the course of a weekend. While you’re in there, rearrange the furniture to give the room a new look, and don’t forget to flip the mattress if it’s due!

A Fresh Coat of Paint Does Wonders

Paint is one of the least expensive tools to make a big difference in a room’s overall appeal. Lighten, brighten or deepen your master bedroom by simply changing the wall color. Look through magazines and think about the well-appointed homes of friends to help you determine which hue would be best for your walls. If you want to get creative, try making an accent wall with a shade that complements or contrasts with the other walls. Another way to change the look of a room is to paint the walls white or cream, and to paint the moldings and ceiling a pastel or muted color. Try sponge painting, stenciling or other artistic techniques. Remember, if you don’t like it, you can simply repaint!

Invest in a New Comforter, Quilt or Duvet

Use the decorating dollars that you have to splurge on a new bedding set. You can get a nice comforter or quilt for under $100 (and even less if you buy during white sales in September or January). If you already have serviceable sheets in a neutral or complementary color, then use those; otherwise, look for a set in white, cream, beige or another shade that will match a new comforter if you buy another one next season.

Look for Interesting Furniture

Chances are that you already have a bureau, dresser and night stand. Even so, take a look at thrift stores and garage sales occasionally to see if you see any antique or offbeat pieces that you’d like to use to replace a worn set. Also, if you have the room, look for chairs that you could re-upholster that might provide a nice place to sit and unwind. While you’re at it, find interesting lighting solutions for a song by checking discount stores, resale stores and big-box stores such as IKEA.

Get Creative With Wall Art

You don’t need to spend a lot of money when it comes to art for your walls. Frame kids’ drawings, family photos, postcards and photographs from vacations that you’ve taken and interesting prints and posters that you find. If you use similar frames for everything, it will give the room a pulled-together look.
Using your imagination and picking up pieces as you can afford them will have your master bedroom looking and feeling great in no time. What are some ways that you’ve spruced up your master bedroom on a dime? Share them with our readers!
